Autobiographical Sitcoms

Recently, I was discussing the show Girls with some friends. We were talking about the episode “One Man’s Trash” where Hannah (Lena Dunham) sleeps with Joshua, a guy she just met, and then stays with him for the next couple days, forgoing all of her responsibilities, etc. Joshua (Patrick Wilson) is much older, and extremely attractive. It was hard for all of us to believe that someone like Hannah Horvath could have an encounter with such an attractive, successful older man.

However, we started talking about how Girls is, in large part, an autobiography of Dunham’s life, so perhaps something like this actually did happen to her. Which brought us into another conversation – what if we were able to turn our everyday lives into a sitcom? Funny, strange, and unexpected things happen to everyone, and we certainly have had our share of, ahem, experiences within our circle of friends. Of course, all we would have to do is jot down some of our more interesting conversations, or log an event that might classify as not-so-normal. Then, with a little exaggeration and a few tweaks here and there, the stories might be just as hysterical to outsiders as they are to our friends. It would definitely be an interesting project as we have already thought of many circumstances that have the potential to turn into something hilarious.

Back For Now

To say it’s been a while since my last post is an understatement… I guess my sad excuse is that senior year happened. But in all honesty, I haven’t been that busy. Maybe I was beginning to feel like I wasn’t writing for myself anymore.

Lately, though, I’ve been having the urge to return to ye olde blog. So, for now at least, I’m back. I wish I could say I have a lot to share from these past few months, but honestly there isn’t a lot.

I guess one of the biggest updates is that I am trying out a new diet. I felt that my weight was getting out of control and I was far too unhealthy. My gravatar picture is from a couple years ago, when I was much, much thinner. Glad to report, though, that so far I have lost 15 pounds. I have a ways to go, but my clothes are fitting me better and that’s motivating me to keep going. I’m hoping to work some kind of frequent exercise into my schedule soon, too.

I have less than 3 months until graduation. I’m just beginning to recognize how much of a change that will be. No school? I don’t remember what life was like without it! I’m not planning on a master’s right away, so who knows when I’ll be a student again. It will be a strange transition for sure.

Anyway, this is my quick introduction back into the blog world. Looking forward to it!

Saturday Stuff

Yikes, it’s been a while since I’ve blogged. Time has really flown by these past couple days – but at the same time, I can’t believe it’s only Saturday!

Anyway, some pictures from my week:

Homemade Taco Salad

I didn’t have taco shells, nor do I have a deep fryer in my apartment, so I used tortilla chips as the base. Piled on top was lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, chicken, and guacamole. It was pretty good, but I still prefer the taco salads from mexican restaurants : )

Pumpkin Bread

{Recipe from Good Housekeeping} This was the first time I have baked something in the apartment, and what’s better than pumpkin bread in the fall?? Answer: nothing. It was so good that it may or may not already be gone… In my defense it wasn’t that big and I had some help eating it. But mostly I blame my lack of self control :p

Chicken Quesadilla

I guess I was craving Mexican food this week?? I threw together a quick lunch while the pumpkin bread was baking. I hadn’t had a quesadilla in forever and our shredded cheese was on the brink of going bad, so it seemed like a good choice. I added some chicken for substance which was leftover from the taco salad and dipped it in salsa. Pretty good for an easy lunch!

Today I’m at my schools library to get some work done use the internet because the Wi-Fi in the apartment is unbearably slow. Haven’t gotten any work done yet… but I’ve done some reading!

I’ve still got tomorrow to do my work. Isn’t that what Sundays are for??

Hope you’re having a nice weekend 🙂

Weekend Eats

I feel like I’ve had a lot of good food recently and need to share!

Starting off with breakfast – I haven’t only been eating overnight oats for breakfast. Since it’s fall, the cooler mornings make me want something warmer, like regular oats! So I had cooked oats with PB & J. Yummm 🙂

In my Chi-town mug : )

I have been mixing chia seeds into my oats when I cook them, and I’ve noticed a change in the texture {for the better!}.

Then dinner on Friday night was at b.good, a “fast food” burger joint that uses fresh ingredients and is made by people, not factories. I ordered the Avocado and Orange salad with grilled chicken, and a side of sweet potato fries. This meal was heavenly. The goat cheese on the salad was so fresh and flavorful, the avocado had just been sliced, and the chicken was straight off the grill. The fries were warm and crispy, with a chewy middle. My mouth is watering from looking at this picture.

Saturday night, I got a text from my friend Emily asking if I wanted to grab dinner at the Pour House, a pub right down the street. They have half price burgers on Saturday nights, so I got a {veggie} burger with blue cheese. AH-MAY-ZING. Seriously. And I got a tall beer for a total of…. 12 bucks!! Good deal, I’d say! No pic of the burger, and I only thought to take a picture once I was already done with my beer.

The atmosphere was very cool, though. A lot of college kids, loud music, fast-paced and busy. It was fun! We had a good time talking yelling over the music and catching up 🙂

I know what you’re thinking… I did go out to eat more than I should have this weekend, so here comes a week of frugality. Also, I just signed up for Starbucks Rewards… am I the last Starbucks customer EVER to do this?! It seems to me I will save quite a bit – my soy misto order is pricey, but with the rewards I can save 60 cents every time I get one {after I use my registered card 5 times}! I’m mad at myself for not doing this earlier. I probably would have saved hundreds…. oops!

Weekend Wishes

It’s been a while but on the bright side I’ve built up quite a list 😉

side note: this is not just a wishlist item – it’s a NEED! hi mom 🙂

And lastly:

No, not a television. CABLE. We don’t have cable here in the apartment… and I feel lame saying this, but I miss it! It’s just an expense that we can’t afford or rationalize right now. HGTV, I’ll see you at Thanksgiving. As for my favorite shows, the internet will have to do. Although the wifi here has been excruciatingly slow. {I went to download something and it said it would be complete in 25 days…} ANYWAY, complaining is done 🙂

Have a great weekend!

First Fall Friday

Technically tomorrow is the first day of Autumn, but for alliteration purposes let’s pretend today is the Autumnal Equinox. 🙂

I got an idea this morning of what I want to put in the three 5×7 frames I bought before I came to school. I had some ideas earlier on that I talked about here, and I ended up deciding to kind of mix a couple of things that inspired me.

I want to get some patterned/scrapbook paper:

{all from Paper Source}

& print one word on each in a thick, black font.

Some ideas for words I had – CreateImagine, Explore

Too cheesy? I’m going to think about it some more. Do you have any ideas?!

Also, my advertising professor shared this quote, and I wanted to pass it along:

“What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me . . . is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story.

It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

– Ira Glass

It really inspired me, so I hope it speaks to someone else that hasn’t heard it before! Anyway, that’s all for today. I’ve got some homework I want to get done before the real weekend begins 🙂

Another Quick & Easy Dinner

I’m excited to share last night’s dinner! It was a last minute meal that ended up being totally satisfying and delicious. We will definitely be making it again. And I must give credit to Hannah – she came up with the idea 🙂

On the menu: Grilled Chicken Wraps with a side of Sweet Potato

Grilled Chicken Wraps

  • Tortilla wrap
  • Grilled chicken, seasoned with salt and pepper {okay, ours was pan-fried chicken :)}
  • Preferred veggies {I used cucumber, tomato, and lettuce}
  • Feta cheese
  • Dressing {I used Poppyseed}

Fake-Bake Sweet Potato

{Since we don’t have a working oven right now, we’ve become much closer with our microwave.} To make this sweet potato, poke a few holes into the uncooked potato with a fork. Put potatoes on a microwave safe plate and cover them with a paper towel. Heat for 4 minutes. Turn potatoes over. Heat for another 4 minutes. If you have only one potato, heat for a total of 5 minutes. Each additional potato will add about 3 minutes of cook time. Serve mashed with butter and salt, or sliced {like mine above} with plain Greek Yogurt or sour cream.

Quick, easy, and delicious. Happy Friday!

Good Day

Today I had one of those mornings {refer to #13}. And not in a good way.

I woke up to find that my alarm had not gone off for some reason, and it was 9:33am. I have class at 10. Insert panic.

I leapt out of bed, threw on clothes {incidentally the same outfit I wore on Tuesday.. shhh}, powdered my face, grabbed a Luna Bar, and ran briskly walked to the T. On a typical day, it takes me 15 minutes total to walk to the T station and get to class. Well, as you can probably see where this is going, it took me 20 minutes today. BUT I still got to my seat at 10:01 and the professor hadn’t yet taken attendance. Amazing.

I was disheveled and sweaty, but I made it to class. I should win something for that.

Anyway, since I didn’t have time for my breakfast of overnight oats {I know, 2 days in a row}, I was looking forward to having it for lunch instead. After class I grabbed a Starbucks Soy Misto, which is just a fancy way to say I got a coffee with steamed soy milk, and walked the 1.5 miles home. {Side note: I just called my apartment ‘home’!}

no, this isn’t from today… but it’s the same drink from the same place : )

It was on my walk that I realized how beautiful this day is – it finally feels like fall! This is my favorite season by far and I try to appreciate every autumn day because it seems to fly by every year.

Point of this post: Despite my imperfect morning, I knew today was going to be a good day. I have a job interview lined up and I have the rest of the day off to spend as I please. And it’s officially my weekend 🙂

And because this is a fairly wordy and pictureless post, here are two random photos:

My dog, Baxter

My cat, Reeses

I miss them.

Happy Thursday, friends!

Boloco for Dinner

Having to pay for groceries, public transportation, and other little things without a job has left me with a tight budget. So far, in the two and a half weeks I’ve been at school, I have avoided going out for dinner {okay, I’ve done it once before tonight but I didn’t have a choice!}.

So after my last class today I arrived back at my apartment around 6 – dinner time. I was hungry and couldn’t decide what to make. And I knew Boloco was the answer. The burrito joint is somewhat of a phenomenon in Boston. BOston LOcal COmpany is where the name comes from – or so I’ve been told. The fast food place is all over the city {one is 3 minutes down the street from my apartment, another is ON my school campus} so I am always being tempted. They are reasonably priced, have really fresh ingredients, and you can make your order as healthy or unhealthy as you please. Needless to say, I’m a fan 🙂

I decided a burrito in a bowl was the way to go tonight, because I knew I was going to order some guacamole as a side to eat with tortilla chips. I ordered online {saving 10% by doing so} and brought my order back to my apartment.

I added my own dressing atop my salad made of: romaine lettuce, grilled chicken, sliced cucumber and tomato, grilled vegetables, black beans, and tomato salsa. I initially thought I should have ordered the next size up {I got a small – the original is bigger}, but this filled me up perfectly.

So I spent money on dinner tonight, but I didn’t spend a lot. I saved a little by using tortilla chips I already had, and I didn’t order a drink. I was smart about it, I enjoyed it, and I know it won’t become a regularity… at least until I get a job!
